Cultural Traditions Celebrate the Moments You’ll Remember

While most vacations provide you with incredible memories, those special moments usually occur when you have no agenda. You're strolling back to your hotel and hear someone laugh somewhere in the distance; the music drifts through the air, and the atmosphere is warm and laid-back. At that moment, you think, "This is why I traveled all the way out here."

Those feelings come from much more than sunsets and ocean views. That feeling comes from culture, tradition, and the rhythmic beat of a city that has taken pride in being who it is for generations and still takes the time to enjoy life.

Exploring Cultural Traditions in a More Relaxed Way

At TAFER resorts in Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, and  Cancún, there's no reason to plan a full-day cultural tour to experience the traditions of these cities. Many memorable experiences can be had while doing absolutely nothing, just near where you're currently staying.

The key is being curious, respectful, and present. Watch first, then listen, see what's going on around you, ask thoughtful questions, and take part when invited. You don't have to be an expert — you just have to be open.

Cabo San Lucas

Cabo San Lucas has a lively energy, and each location has its own distinct local identity. A Member could enhance their trip to either of these locations by devoting one leisurely evening in town.

Instead of racing from activity to activity, try eating a meal, taking a stroll, and allowing the evening to develop as it will. You'll likely find that families congregate, music appears out of nowhere, and the entire spirit of the town shifts once the sun goes down.

If you decide to take anything home with you, it would be well worth exploring the various types of handmade textiles, ceramics, and/or artisanship found throughout the area. Asking where something was made and how it was created can create a tangible memory from your trip.

Puerto Vallarta

In Puerto Vallarta, the culture of the city seems to be woven into everyday life. Residence Club Members can experience a sense of tradition during a casual market morning.

Marketplaces are vibrant destinations filled with color, local flavor, and community energy. Set a small goal for your visit (try a new fruit or snack, buy one handmade item, take some photos respectfully by asking permission  of vendors/artisans). Similarly, music is a big part of the local culture here. If you hear music playing, stop for a moment and enjoy it. In many cases, the best cultural experience is simply standing nearby and taking in the atmosphere.

Cancún

While it is easy to get caught up in planning days filled with activities on the beach in  Cancún, and we have no problem with that, Residence Club Members may want to add one culturally-focused moment to their plans.

Keep it simple, pick one culturally focused moment, and leave the rest of the day wide-open. Food is an easy way to start, designate one dinner to try something that you wouldn't typically order at home.  If traveling with family/friends, let everyone pick something different to eat, and then share it. The dinner will become a shared story and add an additional layer to your Mexican vacation.

Some Respectful Habits to Keep in Mind

Regardless of which destination you visit, there are a few things you can do to show respect for local traditions:

  • Ask before taking photos of people.
  • Look for ways to support local artisans whenever possible.
  • Follow posted guidelines/rules in historic or sacred areas.

Also, it's a good idea to resist the temptation to document everything you see/do. Some experiences are meant to be enjoyed completely, rather than partially documented.

Enhancing Your Vacation Experience

Beach days matter. Pool days matter. Days spent relaxing at the resort are part of why you went in the first place. Cultural traditions are simply an added dimension to the overall experience. These are the moments that you will remember later. The distant music. The taste of something new. The handmade item you purchased and now have in your home.

Perhaps one thing you could aim to do on your next visit to a Residence Club Resort is to add one simple tradition-focused moment. It could be a market morning, a musical evening, or a meal that really represents the destination.

Your vacation will remain relaxing, and you may return home with a greater appreciation for the places you visited.
